English

Within our English department we aim to guide and support students to become better communicators through their speech and writing, to be able to use language creatively and accurately and to understand the writer's techniques through analysis.

We try and bring humor into our lessons; we play games, we work outdoors and we use English apps in the classroom to build engagement with this subject.

We work on a cross curricular level with Outdoor Learning, Creative Media and Independent Living.

We are keen to help students by encouraging the habit and enjoyment of private reading: all students are encouraged to read for personal enjoyment each week.

We encourage an appreciation and knowledge of the English Language through a variety of prose, plays by Shakespeare, literature from the Classical World, poetry from the English literary tradition and graphic novels to challenge their understanding and help them question many of the world's most complex issues.

We use everyday situations to bring English alive for the individual student allowing them to access the subject at their own level of understanding.

Our pupils range in ability and are matched to the appropriate level of English for them. This is determent during their Assessment placement and is reviewed regularly.
